Strong and weak Lagrange-Galerkin spectral element methods for the shallow water equations

چکیده
The Lagrange-Galerkin spectral element method for the two-dimensional shallow water equations is presented. The equations are written in conservation form and the domains are discretized using quadrilateral elements. Lagrangian methods integrate the governing equations along the characteristic curves, thus being well suited for resolving the nonlinearities introduced by the advection operator of the fluid dynamics equations. Two types of Lagrange-Galerkin methods are presented: the strong and weak formulations. The strong form relies mainly on interpolation to achieve high accuracy while the weak form relies primarily on integration. Lagrange-Galerkin schemes offer an increased efficiency by virtue of their less stringent CFL condition. The use of quadrilateral elements permits the construction of spectral-type finite-element methods that exhibit exponential convergence as in the conventional spectral method, yet they are constructed locally as in the finite-element method; this is the spectral element method. In this paper, we show how to fuse the Lagrange-Galerkin methods with the spectral element method and present results for two standard test cases in order to compare and contrast these two hybrid schemes. © 2003 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. Euler–Lagrange equations for the spectral element shallow water system
We present the derivation of the discrete Euler–Lagrange equations for an inverse spectral element ocean model based on the shallow water equations. We show that the discrete Euler–Lagrange equations can be obtained from the continuous Euler–Lagrange equations by using a correct combination of the weak and the strong forms of derivatives in the Galerkin integrals, and by changing the order with...

We develop and evaluate a high-order discontinuous Galerkin method for the solution of the shallow water equations on the sphere. To overcome well known problems with polar singularities, we consider the shallow water equations in Cartesian coordinates, augmented with a Lagrange multiplier to ensure that fluid particles are constrained to the spherical surface. The global solutions are represen...

High-order triangle-based discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for hyperbolic equations on a rotating sphere are presented. The DG method can be characterized as the fusion of finite elements with finite volumes. This DG formulation uses high-order Lagrange polynomials on the triangle using nodal sets up to 15th order. The finite element-type area integrals are evaluated using order 2N Gauss cub...
